Discover the benefits of AlpenSpan
Join the winning team with AlpenSpan
AlpenSpan is not only of higher quality but, when used correctly, more cost-efficient than other bedding options in the long run.
Lower costs, less work.
Less re-bedding through correct usage:
Compared to cheaper competition products, AlpenSpan is much more voluminous and flakier. When using other products, one needs to re-bed with twice as much bedding, while one AlpenSpan bale often lasts an entire week. AlpenSpan unfolds its full potential when used correctly, especially when it comes to the initial bedding, the voluminous base mattress.
Dust-free
Contrary to competition products, AlpenSpan is fully dust-free, promoting the horses’ wellbeing and improving the stable environment.
Efficiency
The rough, voluminous AlpenSpan chips can be ideally sifted using a pitchfork when cleaning out the stable. This saves time and effort and lowers the disposal costs.
Economical
AlpenSpan is the best value for money among all bedding products. Despite higher initial prices, it saves you money in the long run thanks to lower re-bedding quantities and easier handling.

What makes AlpenSpan unique? High bulk volume, low consumption, guaranteed quality, regional production, simple storage and handling and much more.
Unique
Higher volume
AlpenSpan has a higher bulk volume (500 litres per 20-kg bale) than competition products.
Since it’s made from Pabst wood chips, this bedding is particularly fluffy and absorbent.
Economical
Efficient use
Lower consumption: While competition products require you to use twice as much bedding, an initial bedding (3-4 bales depending on box size) and weekly re-bedding with a single bale is enough when using AlpenSpan. The bales are more tightly pressed, resulting in longer shelf life and lower re-bedding quantities.
100% spruce chips
Controlled quality
Since the chips are sourced directly from Pabst Holzindustrie, the chips’ fluffiness can be controlled optimally. AlpenSpan consists of 100% spruce chips that accrue at the planing machines of Johann Pabst Holzindustrie in Zeltweg.
Saves work
Simple handling
AlpenSpan’s special pitchfork makes cleaning out stables child’s play. Targeted removal of horse apples creates clean and hygienic horse boxes.
Short transport routes
Sustainability
AlpenSpan is made from chips that accrue as by-products in planing mills, saving resouces and reducing environmental impacts. Produced by Pabst at its Zeltweg site, AlpenSpan ensures short transport routes and thus, lower carbon emissions.
Healthy
Comfort for your horse
The voluminous bedding creates a pleasant, soft pad for the horses, improving their wellbeing.
AlpenSpan is largely dust-free, which is important for healthy horse lungs.
Practical
Simple storage
The bales can be stacked well and use little space, so that you can also temporarily store them in niches in stables. The bales are weather-proof and easy to store under canopies. Permanent exposure to the elements should be avoided.
AlpenSpan production
Dried and de-dusted spruce chips. Produced entirely sustainably. The best horse and rider could wish for.
AlpenSpan is produced at Johann Pabst Holzindustrie GmbH in Obdach and Zeltweg, where large quantities of planing chips accrue during the production of solid wood products such as planed boards and glued-laminated timber. These dry planing chips are first temporarily stored in a large warehouse. After that, they are divided into coarse and fine portions.
The large, voluminous chips are used to produce Premium AlpenSpan, while the fine chips form the basis for AlpenSpan Basic, which is primarily used as bedding for riding tournaments. Subsequently, conveyor belts transport the chips to a drum screen, followed by a cyclone filter system. There, some 40% of its dust and fine portions are screened and filtered out. These fine portions are further processed into the fuel Pabst-Pellets.
After separation and filtering, the voluminous chips are pressed into 20-kg bales with a volume of 500 litres by a press. The bales are packed using recycled film. Fully automated robots stack the bales onto Euro pallets which are then packed in a weather-proof way. These packed pallets can be stored outdoors for up to one year. The entire production system has a capacity of some 200 bales per hour.
